Project II - Professor Susana Fernando
This project consisted in editing the book "Dictionary of Received Ideas" by Gustave Flaubert. His work is an unusual dictionary, where every word's definition are stereotypes created during the XIX century — the author's living time — and that, surprisingly, most of those stereotypes still remain today. All the work is an huge ironic and humoristic dimension and those figures of speech are the whole basis of this project.
The usual dictionary is systematically boring, or, in other words, is the complete opposite of Flaubert's work. It is thus, it was pretended to modernize the book's design creating illustrations and giving 2 bright colours that can give joy to the book's content.
Moreover, it was created a new reading system to the dictionary. The high organization level, by alphabetic order, is the aspect that best defines the dictionary and, in that way, letter labels were positioned on the 3 margins of the right page, forcing the reader to rotate the book for 3 times and having 3 different ways to leaf through the book's pages, offering the book (piece) a funny, unusual but very organized personality, 3 characteristics that best defines the content of Flaubert's work.

Este projeto consistia em editar livremente o livro "Dicionário das Ideias Feitas" de Gustave Flaubert. A obra é um dicionário invulgar, onde as definições das palavras são estereótipos formados do séc. XIX — época do escritor — e que, surpreendentemente, a maioria deles ainda hoje persistem. Todo a obra tem um carácter bastante irónico e humorístico de Flaubert e é com base nessas figuras de estilo que vive o projeto.
O dicionário vulgar é sistematicamente maçudo, ou seja, o completo contrário desta obra. Nesse sentido, pretendeu-se modernizar o design da obra criando ilustrações e oferecendo duas cores vivas que alegrem a peça final.
Para além disso, criou-se um novo sistema de leitura para o dicionário. O elevado nível de organização, sendo esta de ordem alfabética, é a característica que melhor define o dicionário e, dessa forma, colocou-se várias etiquetas indicativas das letras nas 3 margens do livro (superior, lateral e inferior), forçando o leitor a que tenha de rodar o livro por 3 vezes e que tenha 3 modos diferentes de folhear a página, oferecendo assim ao livro (peça) um carácter divertido, invulgar e muito organizado, 3 características que definem o conteúdo da obra de Flaubert.
